Just like Mr. Coleman's Class

January, 2009

HEY to the Purple and Golden's of Lancaster High School...

Here we are kicking off 2009; our year of celebration and remembering, and we are off to a great start since so many of our classmates have dug into the locked boxes and found wonderful pictures of many years ago to submit. We have been able to also enjoy the updates of families enjoying their 2008 Christmas season. Aren't we all so fortunate?

Since I think so often about all the stones turned in 50 years of travels, and how they got turned, I took the E-Mail list and every ninth name I wrote to, asking for their New Year's resolution. It would seem that five responses was not good, BUT it is 24% which is quite good for a response to anything (what was the % of your kid's responding without a raise of your voice?). Thank you to each who responded, and I know we will get even more classmates involved as time marches on.

From Nancy Schulz McLaughlin:

"My N.Y. resolution is "Stay healthy from now on after my cardiac successes" and "Help as many kids here by teaching them "peaceful" resolution for problems between each other." I work for the County Judge and his wife and I run Teen Court Diversion classes connected to Peace Jam in Arvada, Colorado This is the headquarters for a world-wide Peace Jam organization. With hundreds of kids, we will meet Jody Williams at the Retreat Conference in Denver this year. Jody has been fighting for the end to landmines and cluster bombs which have killed and maimed millions of people in war zones. The U.S. is the main producer for these ridiculous weapons of mass destruction of innocent people. A major movie is being made to come out this year about Jody's life. She will be played by the gorgeous Naomi Watts.

Blessings,

Nancy"

From Darrell Nichols:

"Now - for the New Year's Resolution: When I received the date of the 50th Reunion - I started a diet to try and get closer to what I weighed when I graduated. In June, 1959. I topped the scales at exactly 148 pounds. This August - the scales groaned at a whopping 230. My resolution is to continue the diet and exercise and see how close I can get to the 150 area. (No - I don't think that I will reach 150, but I will consider close ‘ counts‘). Darrell Nichols"

From Bev Cody Pyles:

"Tillie, right now my resolution is to pay off as many of my bills that I can by September so I can start saving for a vacation in 2010. Bev Cody (Pyles)"

From Sandy (Rudolph) Arnold and Alan Hale responded with, “I don't make resolutions”. Maybe that is the best approach…..LOL

I hope each of us has set our personal goals and will attain them in the time we have allowed, and enjoy life while on this journey.

Let's Have Some FUN !!!!!

Your Secret Current Events Editor

(Hint: She has always been on permanent, super secret, double probation for causing trouble clear back to 1955. Some say even before.)

You guessed it. It's Tillie!!!

An acorn was just a crazy nut, like me, but look at it now!!

From Tillie (Bowers) McCarty:

Have you had time with all the fruitcake to eat, and presents to return, to go to the Early History page and look at all that has been added? /earlyhist.htm

Alan Hale would like to thank Mike Campbell for noting that Tobias Studios (or was it National School Pictures?) made a gross error on the 1951-52 picture from North School. It, in fact, is the FIFTH GRADE, not 4 th as is shown on the picture. The way I concluded this is that the teacher is Mrs. Blosser, and I think I recall her being a fifth grade teacher. Did I do it correctly, or is there another answer?

We sure could use YOUR ‘remembering' also. Get out your paper and pencil and make notes as you remember a name in one of the pictures. Then bring all the names to the Reunion where you could win the GRAND prize. See below for the contest rules.

After you have enjoyed the Early History, try www.LHS59.org and scroll to the bottom of the Home page where you will find a link to pictures of the latest gathering of the Gal's for lunch at Pizza Cottage on Ety Rd. west of Lancaster and is one of the many changes you will want to see while in Lancaster for the 50th Reunion Aug 21 & 22, 2009.

Since the time is drawing nigh for our great event, we need to try to coordinate transportation for those who need/want it. Nancy Schulz has mentioned that she must drive and not use public transport due to her illness, so she would like to hear from those who might be going close to, or through LaVeta, CO.

All you have to do is go to the Mailing List page and/or the E-Mail List page to find out where people are located and then contact them if you could help through car-pooling or traveling together. Should you need the password to access either of these secure pages, please contact a member of the Editorial Committee /edcom.htm

I believe...that we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.

? ? ? Which classmate(s) do you think will be at the 50th Reunion, August 21 & 22, 2009, as their first Reunion since June 5, 1959. Send your answer(s) to tilliephilo@sbcglobal.net then watch for your candidate answers to be listed right here next month if they pass muster. The Winner will be announced at the Reunion. Maybe multiple Winners.

Now it is YOUR turn to challenge someone who
has never attended a Reunion......

CHALLENGE TO: Kenny Hinzman who has not been back to Lancaster since 1964. We will see you, Kenny, on Aug 21, 2009.

NAME THAT KID CONTEST

The LHS59 website is sponsoring a contest that will run through the Reunion August 22, 2009, when all in attendance will have had a chance to identify as many as possible in all of the pictures on the website. Begin with the kids on: /earlyhist.htm

Yes, and there will be a prize for the person who submits the most correct IDs.

So, you will need to submit an easily read page, or two, identifying the picture, and using the terms 'front row', 'second row', etc, and ending with 'back row'. Then ID as many in the photos as you can.

The photos can be found throughout the LHS59 site, but mainly on the Early History page of the www.LHS59.org and will be provided at the Reunion for you to a have reference, but remember, this is a CONTEST,so you won't want to share too much information with your classmates.

Since we have several months to get you all the specifics, like the PRIZE, we will just encourage you now to get started with your paper and pencil.

GOOD LUCK to everyone!!!!!

This spot will be reserved each month for a question, or activity, that might have been asked, or assigned, by different teachers we all had, and the questions all come from and 1895 test that was given to pass out of the eighth grade in Kansas.

Mr. Eirick asks:

QUESTION for January: …… If a load of wheat weighs 3,942 lbs., what is it worth at 50cts/bushel, deducting 1050 lbs. for tare?

Please send your answer to tilliephilo@sbcglobal.net so we can all be edified next month.

Pearl Waugh asks:

QUESTION for December....... Define verse, stanza and paragraph.

Also, Susie (Thomas) Hilty sent a note saying that she is feeling fine and all is going well for her.

Susie - Keep up the good work!!!!

Did You Know?

The four Goldberg brothers — Lowell, Norman, Hiram and Max — invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner?

On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees, so the four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car.

They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately. The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office where he offered them $3 million for the patent.

The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,' on the dashboard of each car in which it was Installed.

Now old man Ford was more than just a little anti-Semitic, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg's name on two million Fords.

They haggled back and forth for about two hours, and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown.

And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max on the controls.

So, now you know.

I have included the above logo so you can grab it and copy it/use it in lots of places. It is a jpg format, so all you have to do is a right click on it and save it to your pc, then you can use it in e-mails, print it in a large size and put it on the fridge, or lots of different things. It is our 50th celebration, so let's celebrate!

233 days to go!!!!

See you later,

Tillie
